Barbara L. McQuade (born 1964) is currently the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
McQuade received her bachelors degree from the University of Michigan and her JD from the University of Michigan Law School, later in 1991. She was a law clerk for Bernard A. Friedman.
McQuade was an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan from 1998 until becoming U.S. Attorney in that same district. She was also a professor of law at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law from 2003-2009.
McQuade was appointed by President Barack Obama and started her term as U.S. Attorney on January 4, 2010. During her first year as U.S. Attorney McQuade increased the number of attorneys on her staff by 15.[1]
On the major developments of McQuade's first year in office was the obtaining of a large number of indictments against ex-Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, as well as many of his relatives and members of his administration. This was the result of high level cooperation with FBI Detroit office director Andrew Arena. This investigation began before McQuade took office and with the indictment announcements in December 2010 there was no indication that there would not be more indictments in the future. At a minimum McQuade's office will be involved in the prosecution phase of these corruption charges for most of 2011 and probably significantly beyond.[2]
